Examiner Botches Obama Reading List Story
Every reporter knows the dismal feeling that the angle you were excited about writing just isn’t going to work. You have to scrap your half-written post, but at least no one else knows.
If only Examiner commentary writer Charlie Spiering had had the same feeling earlier today. Spiering aggregated Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner’s interview with Obama, plucking out Obama telling Wenner where he gets his news (Paul Krugman, The New Yorker).
Spiering’s post on the Examiner noted that Obama didn’t read DC publications like the Examiner, Politico, or the Post, and was the thrust of a post on the Examiner’s Tumblr:
No mention of the Washington Examiner (not that we’re surprised), Politico, or the Washington Post.
But, as book critic Mark Athitakis noticed after I tweeted the story out, Obama did say he read the Post in the Rolling Stone interview. The Examiner’s Tumblr post now has a sad correction, and Spiering’s post on the Examiner’s main site incorporates Obama’s mention of the Post (although without a correction notice).
Perils of aggregation!
The best thing to come out of this is the discovery that the Examiner has a Tumblr. And its slogan is “The Other Washington Newspaper,” which seems like a stretch, given the existence of a paper whose name rhymes with the Washington Limes.
